The lighting of the Unity Candle is a relatively recent addition to the traditional wedding ceremony. A tradition initially started in the United States is now widely spread to being practiced in various wedding ceremonies, including Indonesia.

The Unity Candle Ceremony uses two taper candles and a large pillar candle (the unity candle). The two taper candles symbolize the two separate lives, the separate families and seperate sets of friends. By lighting the large pillar candle (Unity Candle) together, it represents one new joined life, family, and friends in love and commitment.
